Cough Syrup was released in 2008 when they went by the name The Jakes, before they were known as Young the Giant. According to lead singer Gadhia, "the song is "kind of a cry for help" to "break free, not necessarily from oppression, but the common symptoms of suburbia like boredom, normality and homogeneity." As they say "life's too short to even care at all..."
My Body is another song that was released while they were known as The Jakes. This song is about self-acceptance and pushing though personal limits to get something more. This has been around for almost 14 years, yet it is still played on alt radio stations.
Firelight is a love song about a man who is so in love, he believes he has died. It is written so poetically and is just a hauntingly beautiful song.
